Everyone Belongs was the theme for Harmony Day 2017. At Giralang Primary School we celebrate diversity every day. We have students from approximately 20 different cultural backgrounds. To celebrate Harmony Day, all students participated in various class activities that focused on cultural diversity and celebrating differences.

Giralang Primary School celebrated International Pi Day by holding a Pi Competition. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorise, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

The objective of our competition was to see who could recite the most digits of Pi. We had over twenty students participate from years 1-6. Olivia and Isobel (pictured above) tied with 67 digits of Pi. It was time for a “Pi off!” Each student was given 8 more minutes of study to try again. This time Olivia reached 74 digits of Pi and the eventual winner was Isobel with 78 digits. Congratulations to both of the girls and all of the participants.

Swimming Carnival 2017

What a wonderful whole school event! All students, K-6, were involved in the 2017 Giralang Primary Swimming Carnival. Traditional races were on offer as well multi-age rotations on dry land and in the pool. Everyone was busy all day! It was wonderful to see our students participate to the best of their ability whilst striving to gain valuable points for their respective house.

Congratulations to Centaur, the overall winning house.

Pictured here are our leaders for each sporting house.

Principal's Message

Welcome to the Giralang Primary School website. As the newly appointed Principal I am quickly discovering what a happy, safe and vibrant learning environment this is characterised by strong community support and involvement. The vision statement - Adventure in Learning, Caring and Achieving - is clearly practiced and actioned every day.

Situated in the north Belconnen region of Canberra, Giralang Primary is a growing government school that caters for students from Preschool to Year 6. Our professional, supportive and innovative teaching team along with our highly skilled support staff take pride in delivering an excellent education in a warm and nurturing environment. We have a strong commitment to a personalised approach to learning in all curriculum areas with a special emphasis on literacy, numeracy and science to ensure the best possible outcomes for all students.

The aims of Giralang Primary School underpin everything we do. We are committed to:

  • creating an atmosphere of respect, encouragement and support for every child
  • developing each child's confidence and self-esteem together with a sensitivity to the needs of others
  • respecting each child's uniqueness and catering for individual needs
  • utilising each child's curiosity, creativity and preferred style of learning within the learning process
  • challenging and assisting each child to attain their potential in educational, social and physical skills
  • encouraging each child in self-discipline and involving the children wherever possible in establishing guidelines for responsible behaviour
  • providing a stimulating professional learning community where initiative, cooperation and participation in the development of excellent school policies is valued and encouraged

Giralang Primary has stimulating and flexible learning spaces, incorporating the latest in technology within the heritage surrounds of a school that has been serving the community for over 36 years. We provide students with the opportunity to develop their interests and abilities through programs designed for student success at the highest level in academic, sporting, cultural and performing arts areas. Giralang Primary students also have the opportunity to learn Japanese from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Our school has a strong values program 'Steps to the Star'. The program encourages students to be caring, cooperative and courteous both within the school community and outside of school in the wider community. Some say you can recognise a Giralang Primary student out of uniform as much as in it.

I am proud to be the Principal of Giralang Primary School and am excited about the directions our school is taking into the future. If you would like to know more about our school you are most welcome to contact the school to speak with me personally.

I do hope you enjoy exploring our website further to learn more about our wonderful school.

Best Wishes,

Belinda Love
